Periyar National Park - Thekkady

Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady

Also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve, this dense forest is located in the Western Ghats of Kerala, southern India. This wildlife sanctuary is home to rarely sighted tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian bison.

One of the largest Tiger Reserves in South India, this park is very popular for the boat rides in the Periyar Lake, which extends to the heart of this forest. Though the boating is restricted in this lake, early morning boat rides are more popular for spotting wildlife near the banks.

This Sanctuary, located in Thekkady, is one of the well conserved forest range in the country and the efforts in protecting the elephants and tigers from poachers have helped their population well.

Here, wildlife enthusiasts have the option of staying overnight inside the sanctuary, in a heritage accommodation well maintained by the forest department and managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.

The forest department also organizes guided trekking inside the wildlife sanctuary, depending on the climactic conditions.
