Situated on the Western Ghats region in Kerala, Munnar provides a surrealistic setting with sprawling tea plantations with a backdrop of innumerable mountains, misty air and cool climes. Once a resort for the British Raj elite, the tea gardens here were established in the late 19th century. It has remained the top destination among domestic tourists for many years.

Another hill in the vicinity, the Rajamalai, has been elevated as Eravikulam National Park, where Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered antelope breed, is being protected.
