Munnar

Munnar is one of the most picturesque hill stations in the World. 1,600 m above sea level, Munnar was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. It has now evolved into a leading tourist attraction and offers well-maintained trekking trails and picnic spots. Virgin forests, savannahs, rolling hills, scenic valleys, numerous streams, gushing waterfalls, sprawling tea plantations and winding walkways - one could find all of these in this hill station !!!

Ever increasing popularity of this hillstation is accentuated by the most exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here, Neelakurinji, a flower which blooms like a carpet of blue and covering the hills once in every twelve years.

Following are the attractions in and around Munnar, and included in our sightseeing package:

Eravikulam National Park, Rajamalai Hills

One of the main attractions near Munnar is the Eravikulam National Park, Rajamalai Hills. Entry to the park is restricted and controlled by the Forest Department. This park is famous for the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered antelope breed native to these hills. Visitors could catch a glimpse of the rare Nilgiri Tahr, and if they are lucky, herds of elephants, sambar and gaur. Spread over an area of 97 sq. km., this park is also home to several species of rare butterflies, animals and birds. This is a great place for trekking and offers a magnificent view of the mist covered tea plantations below.

Chinnakanal & Anayirangal

About 15kms from Munnar Town lies Chinnakanal, a beautiful location on the ghat road to Thekkady. While traversing towards Chinnakana, one would cross an open section on the hills known as Gap Road. Once you cross the Gap Road, the views on the sides are simply stunning with hills on one side and steep valley on the other. Chinnakanal has waterfalls, popularly known as the Power House Waterfalls, which cascade down a steep rock 2000 m above sea level. The spot offers a scenic view of the Western Ghat ranges. Further down is Anayirangal, 22 km from Munnar, which is a lush green carpet of tea plantations. There is also a dam here, surrounded by tea plantations and evergreen forests.

Tea Museum

Munnar has a legacy of its own when it comes to the origins and evolution of tea plantations. Taking account of this legacy and to preserve and showcase some of the exquisite and interesting aspects of the genesis and growth of tea plantations in Kerala's high ranges, a museum exclusively for tea was opened some years ago by Tata Tea in Munnar. This Tea Museum houses artifacts, photographs and machineries; all of which have a story to tell about the origins and growth of tea plantations in Munnar. The museum is located at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea in Munnar and is worth a visit.

One could even visit a Tea Factory and get first hand experience of how tea is made.
